RRASTools FAQ
Q. What error does the user get if a violation occurs?
A. Windows 95 and 98 will get error 629. NT4 users may get this error or the connection
will simply terminate once connected.
Q. I have made changes to the setup using 'RRASTools' but the changes have not taken
effect.
A. Any changes requires the 'Routing and Remote Access Service' be restarted for the
changes to take effect.
Q. I get the following errors in the 'Event Log', 'Cannot load the RAS third party
administration DLL component. The following error occurred: The specified module could
not be found' or/and 'The Routing And Remote Access Service terminated with
service-specific error 126'.
A. RRASTools requires that the file 'RRASToolsCtl.dll' be in the same folder as
'RRasTools.exe'. Once placed in the correct place restart the 'Routing and Remote
Access Service'. NOTE: before uninstalling RRASTools disable it, found under the
services menu item.
Q. What is the difference between the demo version of RRASTools and the sold version?
A. The demo version will allow 300 logons, after which it will stop functioning. RRAS
will continue to work but the components will not be applied to the groups. Restarting
the 'Routing and Remote Access Service' will reset the count and RRASTools will work
again. There is no restriction to the number of logons in the sold version.
Q. Can I use RRASTools with domain controllers?
A. V2.00 applies the components to local groups on the server RRASTools is installed on.
Domain controllers can be used but the users and groups must be local to the server
RRASTools is installed on. V2.10 has support for querying local groups on the Domain
Controllers, on the primary domain, as well as Stand Alone Servers.
Q. Does RRASTools offer any support for Radius?
A. Yes. RRASTools will function when RRAS is used with a Radius Server. RRASTools
operates in exactly the same way as when authentication is done directly within RRAS.
This means that the RRAS server or the Primary Domain Controller needs to be queried
in order to test whether the user is in a group with components attached (if so the
component will be applied to the user). RRASTools V2.3 has been tested with Windows
2000 IAS server without any problems. It is important to remember that radius
authentication does not require browser access (Network Neighborhood) to the radius
server. If RRASTools is going to be used the RRAS server will need browser access
to the computer with the users and groups. IASTools has been designed for IAS and
should be used rather than RRASTools.
Q. What service packs should I have installed?
A. At least service pack 4 with NT4. This should be loaded before and after RRAS is
loaded. Once this is complete and you have tested RRAS, then install RRASTools.
Q. When using the equations in section 6.1 of the manual, the results are compared to the value
in the event log, there is a small discrepancy.
A. The compression ratios given by RRAS are only two digits with no decimal places.
This results in a truncation error. The error is small and on average should produce
very accurate results.
Q. With the Limit Logon feature I have set my Max Logon to (say 4) but only 3 users can
logon (number less than 4).
A. Take note not to remove or add a user to a Limit Logon group while the user is logged
on. Checks for Limit Logons are done at logon and logoff. If a user logged on without
belonging to a Logon group but logs off belonging to the group the number of logged on
users in the group will be upset. Restarting RRAS will sort this out.
Q. I get error 115 while upgrading or installing.
A. The RRASToolsCtl.dll is in use by RRAS causing the error when setup tries to overwrite
it. Stop RRAS service and retry. If the error reoccurs then restart the server. Stop RRAS
service and then reinstall.
