IASTools Overview
Radius (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service) is a protocol for carrying
authentication, authorization, accounting and configuration information between a
Network Access Server (NAS), which desires to authenticate its links, and a shared
Authentication Server. Microsoft's implementation of the Radius Server is called
IAS (Internet Authentication Service). Windows 2000 Server has IAS incorporated.
Windows NT 4 users will need to install IAS from the 'Option Pack' then upgrade
to IAS/c. IAS/c is a free download from the MS web site.
Microsoft also offers RRAS which can act as a client to IAS (i.e. NAS), on both NT 4
(RRAS upgrade) and Windows 2000 Server. All radius clients are authenticated using
their credentials stored on a Domain Controller. IASTools extends the functionality
of IAS with the help of a State Server.

The State Server stores the state of the NAS's. The state refers to what
each port on each NAS box, or RRAS Server, is doing, and who is logged on.
With this information, concurrent logons (more than one port in use that were authenticated
with the same username and password) can be stopped. A State Server could also
store the IP addresses that are in use making IP-Pools possible.
IASTools contains a State Server, a plug in dll for IAS, configuration, tuning and
load testing programs. Flexibility and scalability have been the primary design
considerations. IASTools can scale up to 500 logons per second. This should offer
a solution all the way up to enterprises and large ISPs, but at the same time
provides an affordable option for smaller ISPs. Other than Windows 2000 no
other software is required. Logging can be performed to any ODBC enabled database.
Requirements
IASTools is divided into two elements, server and client. The client software must
be installed on all IAS servers. The server program must be installed on the computer
that you intend to make the State Server. This may be the same computer if desired.
Client: Windows 2000/2003 with IAS installed. Suitable hardware for running IAS as
specified by Microsoft. Windows NT 4 users can find IAS in the 'Option Pack'. Once
installed you will need to upgrade to IAS/c which can be downloaded from the
MS web site.
Server: NT4 workstation/server or Windows 2000/XP/2003 professional/server. Memory
should
at least be 128megs, but IASTools will run on less. An ODBC enabled database is required
if logging is desired i.e. MS Access, Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL etc.
