Software Lab
Windows NT4 and Windows 2000/2003 have made inroads into the remote access arena. Software Lab
has developed two packages to assist network administrators control their dial-in users.
Control over the amount of network access, when and how much bandwidth the dial-in user is
permitted, can all be controlled through these programs. If you have deployed RRAS then RRASTools
is what you need. If you are using Radius with IAS (Internet Authentication Service) then
IASTools will offer the control you require.
IASTools V1.0 (V2.0pre1 Beta available)
IASTools contains a State Server. The State Server stores
information about what the state of your NAS boxes are, i.e. which ports are in use and by whom.
This permits features like Session Control (how many ports can be used with the same username and
password concurrently) and Group limits (how many users in a group can connect at the same time). In addition
the State Server can also offer IP addresses to users from an IP-Pool. Flexibility and scalability
are the major advantages of IASTools. Logging options to any ODBC database has also been
included. IASTools can scale up to 500 authentications per second. Web Interface and ActiveX components
are also included.

RRASTools V2.3
If you have deployed RRAS for your dial-in users and you are not using IAS then RRASTools is
what you require. RRASTools can operate on a single server or domain model. RRASTools can
control concurrent logons (users using the same username and password to access your network),
multilinks (how many lines can a user bundle together to make one link) and ISDN. Other
features include ODBC logging, Group Limit (how many users in a group can logon at once)
and IP-Pools. IP-Pools enables administrators to control the degree of access the user is permitted.
Blocking IP addresses at various points on a network would restrict a users access.

RRASTools and IASTools both use local groups to bind their components to. If the user belongs to
the group that has the feature bound, then the feature will be applied when the user dials-in.
This allows for a simple migration from RRASTools to IASTools. The use of the local groups
should also permit integration with existing software.
